Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) has taken a bold step by filing a motion to vacate against Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA-20) on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today. The move comes after months of frustration and disappointment over the Speaker's failure to uphold their agreement.
Earlier this year, a group of lawmakers, including Gaetz, sought to bring about change in Washington, D.C. before allowing McCarthy to assume the speakership. The concessions they demanded included passing single-subject spending bills, votes on a balanced budget and term limits, releasing the January 6th tapes in full, and committing to not using Democrat votes to advance President Joe Biden's agenda.
Sadly, for the past eight months, Speaker McCarthy has repeatedly breached this agreement. While there have been some minor improvements, such as voting on term limits in the House Judiciary Committee and passing a few single-subject spending bills, it was only after Rep. Gaetz applied pressure that these changes were made. McCarthy's failure to act properly has resulted in him joining forces with Democrats to pass a continuing resolution that funds Ukraine, supports Jack Smith's election interference against former President Trump, abandons E-Verify, and fails to prioritize the interests of the American people.
In response to McCarthy's betrayal, Rep. Gaetz introduced the motion to vacate. The video of this historic moment can be viewed HERE.
This motion represents a significant step in holding Speaker McCarthy accountable for his actions. Gaetz's determination to fight for the American people and ensure that their voices are heard is commendable.
