The Untold Story of Leonard Destin: A History Talk at the Destin Library

Destinlibrary

City of Destin recently issued the following announcement.

H.C. "Hank" Klein, Destin historian, author, and speaker, will give a history talk about Destin's Founding Father, Leonard Destin on Tuesday, February 1st at 4:00 p.m. at the Destin

Library. Leonard, with his father and two brothers, sailed from New London, Connecticut to Key West, Florida in 1835, to extend their fishing season in the warm Florida Territorial

waters.  Leonard’s father and one of his brothers drowned off the east coast of Florida during a hurricane and Leonard Destin never returned to his home in Connecticut. Hank

Klein will present an untold story that will reveal why the Destin family was going to Key West that winter, where the shipwrecks occurred, why Leonard left the Florida Territory, and

where he actually lived until he permanently settled in Moreno Point Military Reservation in 1852.  You will also learn who the first settlers of Moreno Point in the 1840s really were.

This event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served, so be sure to arrive early. If you have any questions, please contact the library at 850-837-8572 or
