City of Crestview issued the following announcement on Nov. 16.
After a year’s hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, Mayor JB Whitten’s annual Help the Homeless 5K run is back. At 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, runners will run from the Community Center, down Industrial Drive to Spanish Trail Park and back, all for a great cause near and dear to the mayor’s heart.
Helping alleviate the plight of the homeless is one of the mayor’s priorities, and the $10 run registration fee, cash donations, and donations of nonperishable food will greatly benefit the city’s efforts toward helping the homeless.
“Homelessness is a persistent problem in our community,” Mayor Whitten said. “The pandemic has only aggravated the problem.”
The mayor has partnered with the Crestview Area Shelter for the Homeless (CASH) on several awareness and fundraising projects since his days as a City Council member and the council president.
Run registration (cash or check only) is at the Twin Hills Park gym office or City Hall. Forms can also be downloaded from the city website, https://www.cityofcrestview.org/660/Sports-and-Event-Registration-Forms.
“All proceeds will be donated to CASH,” city event coordinator Rebecca Campbell said.
While the race is not timed, prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third-place runners, Mrs. Campbell said. Runners and supporters are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food and gently worn clothing for CASH’s clients.
