Swing Into The Season

9

City of Crestview issued the following announcement on Nov.

“Swing into the Season” is a big band dance with a USO vibe coupled with a remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack that propelled the United States into World War II.

And it’s coming Nov. 27 to Warriors Hall.

Featuring the 15-piece Hashtag Swing big band, “Swing into the Season” is the first event under Crestview’s new Cultural Services Division, a part of the Parks and Recreation Department created to bring cultural opportunities to the county seat.

The dance is the brainchild of Dako Morfey, a certified Living History Corpsman with the National World War II Museum, who is advising Cultural Services on an April 22-24, 2022, World War II re-enactment weekend slated for Twin Hills Park, for which the dance is a fundraiser.

“We’ve been practicing our Christmas repertoire, playing holiday favorites with a big band sound,” Hashtag Swing’s Dorothy Burress said. “We’ll also have plenty of traditional big band-era music as well.”

A small ensemble of the orchestra is also working on “Remember Pearl Harbor,” a rallying song released just weeks after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on the Hawaiian naval base on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously called “a date which will live in infamy.”

History displays about the Pearl Harbor attacks and an exhibit of World War II artifacts will enhance the educational aspect of the event. Hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks are included in the $20 ticket price, and a silent auction of World War II collectibles will be held.

The evening is a fundraiser for expenses related to the April 2022 “Hail Our Heroes” WWII re-enactment scheduled for Twin Hills Park and is supported by the Crestview Historic Preservation Board. Tickets are on sale in advance and at the door.
