A kitchen employee at the Walton County Jail has been arrested after an investigation found she engaged in sexual misconduct with an inmate. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office reported that on February 18, investigators received information about an inappropriate relationship between Kelly Jo Johnson, a 56-year-old resident of Bonifay and jail kitchen worker, and an inmate assigned to kitchen duties.

Following this tip, both internal and criminal investigations were launched. Investigators conducted interviews, reviewed recorded jail phone calls, checked surveillance video footage, and collected additional evidence. Authorities concluded there was probable cause to believe Johnson had unlawful physical contact with the inmate inside a secure area of the jail. She also communicated with the inmate outside her job responsibilities using methods intended to avoid monitoring.

Johnson was fired from her position on February 27. She had worked for the agency since October 2025. The findings were sent to the State Attorney’s Office, which issued an arrest warrant. Johnson turned herself in at Walton County Jail on March 4 at 10 p.m., facing felony charges of sexual misconduct between detention facility employees and inmates.

“These actions are a betrayal of the professionalism and ethical standards we expect of every employee,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “When someone abuses their position of trust, we will take swift and decisive action. No one is above the law – civilian or sworn – who works at this agency.”

The sheriff’s office stated that additional administrative reviews are ongoing and more information will be released when available.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office also emphasized its commitment as an Equal Opportunity Employer. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, reasonable accommodations are provided for qualified individuals with disabilities; veterans are encouraged to apply; and preference is given according to state and federal laws for certain service members and their families.
