The UWF women’s basketball team made its first six shots and ran away with a 75-51 win over Mississippi College at the UWF Field House on Saturday.

The game saw a loud and energetic crowd following a youth clinic with nearly 100 girls in 8th grade and below as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The event is part of the Women’s Sports Foundation and the local event on the UWF campus was sponsored by the Florida Lottery.

UWF came out on fire, taking a 13-4 lead as Jaclyn Jarnot scored the team’s first six from the floor. The Argonauts extended the margin to 20-5 by the end of the opening quarter and led 37-15 late in the half. The Argos shot 50 percent in the first half for a 39-22 advantage after 20 minutes.

The Argos were especially strong in the transition game, getting 12 fast break points while scoring 22 points in the paint.

“The biggest difference with our defense is each player takes it upon themselves to handle their defensive assignments every game,” UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said.

“Offensively we thought we could get out and run (on MC) and get some easy buckets. We had to get stops first and rebound the ball, and then get the offense moving. And that’s what you saw with the layups early and then our confidence just grew.”

Jarnot finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while frontcourt mate Zoe Piller scored 16 and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds. Moriah Taylor matched her season best with 15 points and three 3-pointers while handing out five assists.

For the game, UWF (13-5, 13-3 Gulf South) connected on 46 percent shooting and held the Lady Choctaws to 28 percent, including 4-of-23 from outside.

That defense led to a strong transition game that saw the Argos put up 16 fast break points.

UWF had 51 rebounds and scored 48 points in the paint.

UWF will wrap-up its 3-game homestand on Wednesday against West Georgia (7-11, 6-9) at the UWF Field House. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
