Washington, D.C. — During a House Armed Services Committee hearing, Assistant Secretary of Defense Rebecca Zimmerman and General Laura Richardson discussed the Department of Defense's activities in the Western Hemisphere and the potential challenges to security, specifically focusing on the anticipated mass migration from Haiti into the United States through Florida.

In response to questioning from U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz, Zimmerman acknowledged the expected influx of Haitian migrants and stated, "We're doing a number of things to ensure that we're keeping track of the situation and we're prepared... I think you're right, that the driving conditions in Haiti could very well press more people."

Gaetz expressed his concerns about the situation, highlighting the need to prevent the parole of Haitian migrants into the United States and instead repatriate them. He urged the activation of legal authorities, including Executive Order 13276 signed by President George W. Bush, to utilize naval assistance in deterring and repatriating migrants before they reach U.S. soil.

General Richardson confirmed that preparations are being made for a potential mass migration, stating, "I think that we need to be postured appropriately... And I have put in a request for increased capability to do exactly that." Richardson also indicated a willingness to make the necessary requests to utilize Department of Defense assets for this purpose.

Gaetz emphasized the importance of proactive measures in addressing the humanitarian crisis, stating, "I really think getting ahead of this will ensure that the humanitarian conditions will be far better... I greatly appreciate the exchange today."

The discussion during the hearing highlighted the gravity of the situation and the need for decisive action to address the anticipated mass migration from Haiti into Florida. As the Biden Administration considers the use of the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense to manage the situation, efforts are being made to prepare for potential challenges and ensure the safety and security of both migrants and the United States.
