Washington, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz has introduced the 'Parents' Right to Know Act,' a legislation aimed at granting parents access to their children's school medical and counseling records. This move comes in response to guidance issued by President Joe Biden's Department of Education in April 2023, which clarified that parental access to student health information is prohibited without the student's written consent.

The Department's guidance has sparked concerns among parents and guardians who feel that they are being denied access to crucial information regarding their children's mental health. Congressman Gaetz's bill seeks to counteract this guidance by amending the General Education Provisions Act, granting parents the right to access their children's medical and counseling records, with the exception of cases where an active state protective order prohibits it.

"The federal government should not be inhibiting parents' ability to see records that could affect their children's upbringing," Congressman Gaetz emphasized. "My bill reinforces the right for parents to access medical and counseling records of their children, lifting the veil of secrecy in Biden's Education Department. Parents don't just have a 'right' to know what's happening in their children's lives at school – they have a non-negotiable claim to it."

The full text of Congressman Gaetz's bill can be found on his official website. Furthermore, exclusive coverage of the bill can be accessed via the Washington Examiner.

It is important to note that this legislation aims to address the concerns of parents who feel excluded from their children's healthcare decisions. By granting parents access to their children's school medical and counseling records, the 'Parents' Right to Know Act' aims to empower parents and provide them with the information they need to make informed decisions regarding their children's well-being.
