The University of West Florida women's soccer team (2-1-1) went toe-to-toe with Florida Southern in Sunday's afternoon matchup but a foul in front of the box allowed the Mocs (2-0-2) to take the win 1-0.
In the second half, possession was maintained on the Argos attacking side but the shot opportunities could not fall through. The match was fairly even with the Argos out possessing the Mocs 54-46%. Each team committed nine fouls but with one ending in a goal.
In the 68th minute, Destiny Hird drew a foul in the middle of the pitch just 20 yards out. Angelina Cohelo of the Mocs hit the free kick in the top left to be just out of touch of the keepers span to connect in the back of the net for a goal. The Argos did not put their heads down as they kept fighting to continue to get shots off and a pair of corner kicks but it just was not enough.
It was an aggressive game as the match started out with a couple of Argo fouls with the first half ending with eight between the two teams.
The Argos outshot the Mocs 8-1 and had a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks without allowing any shots on goal. The Argos pressured the Mocs no matter the area of the ball to keep the pace of the quick and intense.
Leading into the second half, it continued to be a constant battle as there were a total of 15 shots (Argos led 9-6) and nine fouls distributed between the teams.
Goalkeeper Maciah Lipsey played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves.
Blair Cowan and Ahnalie Layman combined for nine shots, none of which came on goal. As many shots were just shy of the goal, only two shots were on target that came from Layman and Brianna Pope.
The Argos will head on the road to Alabama to take on Alabama Huntsville Friday, Sep. 9 at 5:00 p.m. and West Alabama Sunday, Sep. 11 t 1:00 p.m. to begin regular season conference matches.
