University of West Florida recently issued the following announcement.

UWF shot 52 percent in the second half

Maddie Griffon made a driving layup with 34 seconds left and then UWF got a defensive stop for a 64-60 win over Alabama Huntsville at Spragins Hall on Sunday.

After the Chargers tied the game at 60 on a Selena Pruitt 3-pointer, Griffon waited for her opening and drove down the left side of the lane for a smooth layup and a 62-60 Argonaut lead.

On the ensuing possession, UAH had four shots before Zoe Piller grabbed her ninth rebound of the contest with 0.6 to play. Her two free throws iced the game and gave the rookie from 100 miles away in Nolensville, Tennessee a game-high 17 points.

Charlotte Ellmore scored 15 points and Amara Newsom came off the bench for a season-high 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Griffon had nine points, five boards and three steals.

UWF (11-2, 6-1 Gulf South) shot 44 percent and rebounded from Friday's loss with its fourth-consecutive victory at UAH.

UAH (1-10, 0-6) remained winless in the league and was outscored 37-23 in the final 18 minutes of the contest. Alexis Woods led the Chargers with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds in her first substantial playing time in a month.

UWF scored the game's first eight points, getting two baskets from Griffon and Piller. The Chargers battled back and tied it at 9 with a 7-0 run. Ellmore got the score knotted at 14 to end the first quarter on a 21-foot shot from the corner as time expired.

UAH opened up a 33-27 lead at the half thanks to a 9-0 run late in the period.

The Chargers scored the first four points of the third quarter for a 10-point lead before the UWF defense locked in and the offense came alive. UWF put together a 14-3 run for a 41-40 lead. They later added a 10-3 run that extended the advantage to 51-44 early in the fourth. UAH worked it to a tie game with just over a minute to play which led to Griffon's game-winning basket.

UWF will return home to face No. 22 Valdosta State (11-2, 6-1) on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is at 2 p.m., with the men's game against the Blazers to follow at 4 p.m.
