University of West Florida issued the following announcement on Dec. 8.
Award given to the top player in all of Division II Volleyball from this past season
On the same day that their Assistant Coach is named the AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year, the University of West Florida Volleyball team received some more national recognition as middle blocker Veresia Yon is named the D2CCA Ron Lenz National Player of the Year.
Awarded to the top player in all of Division II Volleyball, Yon becomes the first West Florida Volleyball player to be named the National Player of the Year in program history. Additionally, Yon now also becomes the 14th athlete in West Florida Athletics history to be named their respective sports National Player of the Year.
Dominating all season long, Yon currently ranking 1st in the nation in Hitting Percentage, 10th in the nation in Blocks per Set, 6th in the nation in Total Blocks, and 41st in the nation in Points per Set. Within the GSC, Yon ranks 1st in the conference in Hitting Percentage and Blocks per Set while ranking 3rd in Points per Set and 5th in Kills per Set.
Earning the Conference's Player of the Week award on three separate occasions this season, Yon also became the first AVCA National Player of the Week recipient in program history this season taking home the award in the third week of the season.
After setting a new single season block record her Freshman campaign, Yon all but obliterated that once again this season totaling 18 more total blocks in two less sets on the year. In addition to this new program record, Yon also now ranks fourth all-time in program history in career blocks, first all-time in career hitting percentage, and set a new single season high for hitting percentage.
Not just a standout on the court but in the classroom as well, Yon has also earned a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this season which marks the second time in her career that she has achieved this milestone.
This National Player of the Year recognition adds to the already lengthy list of awards Yon has received this season as she was named an AVCA First Team All-American, AVCA All-Region Player of the Year, D2CCA South Region Player of the Year, as well as the GSC Player of the Year.
Yon was also named a D2CCA First Team All-American alongside teammates Taylor Vaneekeren, Madi Cooler, and Ashton Marshall. Vaneekeren earned Second Team All-American honors, Cooler earned Third Team All-America honors, while Marshall earned Honorable Mention All-America honors.
