Dominant First Half Leads Argos to Win Over Albany State

University of West Florida issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.

UWF now leads 7-1 in all-time series history against Albany State

For the second time this season the UWF Men's Basketball team defeated the Albany State Rams. With a 71-62 win, the Argos are now 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Wendell Matthews put the team ahead early after knocking down two jumpers giving the team a 4-0 lead. The Rams were forced to call a quick timeout after Darrin Jenkins made a layup putting the Argos up 6-0. During the first half West Florida dominated both defensively and offensively. As a team UWF was 17-32 shooting 53.1 percent from the field.

Darrin Jenkins led the team at the half with 12 points. Wendell Matthews wasn't far behind with 11 points and  had a team high six rebounds. Beyond Matthews and Jenkins, the Argos scoring was scattered with Daniel Sofield, Brandon Burford, Dave Petit-Homme and LaTrell Tate all knocking down at least one three-pointer.

Defensively, West Florida forced nine turnovers and had six steals. Jenkins had two of the Argos steals. UWF outrebounded ASU 23-9. ASU struggled shooting in the first half and was 10-28 from the field shooting 35.7 percent. The Rams had six three-pointers, shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.

In the second half UWF was 10-27 from the field, shooting 37 percent from the field.  Although the Argos offense struggled in the second half the team was able to hold on to the lead majority of the game, with the Rams briefly taking the lead at one point. Albany State shooting was much improved from the first half shooting 15-36 from the field on 41.7 percent shooting.

Overall UWF shot 45.8 percent from the field, with 47 rebounds and seven steals. ASU shot 39.1 percent from the field and had 27 rebounds.

Wendell Matthews finished the night as the team's leading scorer with 17 points. Daniel Sofield knocked down two three's and finished with 16 points, Jenkins ended the game with 12 points and LaTrell Tate had 10 points. Dave Petit-Homme had an outstanding night on both sides of the ball getting his first double double of the season with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Up next the team will face Lee University on the road in Cleveland, Tenn on Saturday, Dec.11.
