University of West Florida Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 9.
Darrin Jenkins led the Argos with 10 points
The University of West Florida Men's Basketball team dropped an exhibition game against Division I Sunbelt opponent Louisiana Lafayette 81-47 at the Cajundome on Tuesday night.
In the first half of the game Louisiana Lafayette got off to a quick start and never looked back. From the field the Argos shot 9-31 during the first half of the game. Darrin Jenkins led the charge for West Florida with six points during the first half. David Petit- Homme came off the bench during the first half and scored five points for the Argos.
The Ragin Cajuns shot 19-39 from the field for an overall first half percentage of 48.7. Jordan Brown led the Cajuns in scoring with 14 points on the night, shooting 7-14 from the field. Louisiana Lafayette had 27 rebounds, five blocks and three steals to stall the Argos offense.
In the second half the game the West Florida offense started to gain momentum, with Daniel Sofield scoring the first five points of the half. West Florida was able to string together more runs during the second half and force six turnovers.
Louisiana Lafayette's size and speed proved to be a tough task for West Florida.
Darrin Jenkins was the only Argo to finish the game in double digits with 10 points. Sofield had nine with seven of those points coming during the second half. David Petit- Homme and Brandon Burford each had six points, while Jackson Henningfield added five.
West Florida was 7-10 from the free throw line, while the Ragin Cajuns were 5-11. Overall West Florida was outshot 47.9 percent to 27.3 percent throughout the course of the game. LaTrell Tate had a team high seven rebounds in his West Florida debut.
"Our guys found out tonight what it's like to play against a very good mid major team, UWF Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer said. "We really struggled with their size and had a hard time getting into offense. We rebounded better in the second half but really struggled with physicality. Tonight was a learning experience that I hope will help us this weekend in games that count."
Next up West Florida will play their first countable game against Fort Valley State University on Friday, Nov.12 in the GSC/SIAC Crossover. The Argos will close out the GSC/SIAC Crossover against Clark Atlanta on Nov.13.
