Friends of the Freeport Public Library to Launch Early Literacy Sensory Bin Program

6

Walton County recently issued the following announcement.

The Friends of the Freeport Public Library are thrilled to announce an early literacy project to promote Kindergarten readiness at the Freeport Public Library to begin September 7, 2021.

With grant support from the Dugas Family Foundation, the Friends of the Freeport Public Library are sponsoring a 26-week initiative available to 100 children ages 2-5 who have not yet started Kindergarten. This program asks participants to pick up materials weekly at the library which aim to support family learning and phonemic awareness. Focusing on one letter each week, participants will get items to go in the provided sensory bin, activity sheets, flashcards, and a parent handout with suggestions for activities to do together using the provided materials.

“This program was designed to get families working together to play and learn. Promoting literacy is a goal of the library system, and I am excited to see how the Friends’ support of our library and community will help us achieve this goal for some of our youngest patrons,” says library director, Caitie Cerise.

The project requires a commitment to finish all 26-weeks, and a short survey at the end of the program. Interested participants can sign up at www.tinyurl.com/FFPLEarlyLiteracy with registration closing once all spots are filled.
