A note from your Pastor …
A Big God who Works in Small Ways
Last Sunday, God’s word spoke to us about a Big God. Sometimes we make God out to be too small to fit our small thinking. Our God is greater than we can imagine, and when we sell God short, it is to our detriment. But it occurred to me that God is also small. God can be found in the small things, like a butterfly or an ant. God honors small things, like even a little faith. God’s heart goes out to the small creatures like the sparrow, and small people like the widow, the orphan and the alien. God lifts up small hearts, like the downtrodden, the weary, the hopeless. Just as we would be remiss to make God too small, we would also be in error to overlook God in the small things.
Think about it. God used people of low birth, like Moses and David and Jesus, to transform kingdoms. God used small things, like Moses’ staff, and David’s small sling stones, to topple the mighty. Jesus taught us wonderful lessons with small things, like mustard seeds, a little leaven, a few pieces of bread and fish, and a few pennies given by a devout widow. James warned of the small tongue that can do great harm. God honors the small congregation, promising that where two or three are gathered, there He will be. And God used a small wooden cross on which to offer the greatest sacrifice.
As you are reading this, take a moment and look around you. Pick something small: a pen or paper clip, or the spoon you used to stir your coffee; perhaps your cell phone or a piece of paper. What lessons can God teach you with that small thing? How does God speak to you His message of life? Now take that lesson and find someone to share it with. Maybe you can go to someone at work, or at the table eating with you, and say, “You know I was thinking about this little thing…..” The next thing you know, you will be sharing a holy message to someone. That’s good news… and that’s a big thing.
See? It’s the little things that can make such a difference.
