City of Crestview issued the following announcement.
The Crestview Community Center’s small meeting room was abuzz with the snip of scissors, flap of ribbon, crunch of wire-wrapped picks in florist’s foam, and chatter of nine volunteers making 30 table centerpieces for the city’s Aug. 29 World War II Victory Ball.
“Normally we wouldn’t need so many tables for this sort of event,” event organizer and caterer Mary Richard said. “But because we’re going to be practicing social distancing and only seating half of each table’s capacity, and because we’re going to be spreading the tables out more than usual, we’re needing more tables.”
The ball culminates Crestview’s Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28 and 29, World War II Victory 75th Anniversary Commemoration activities.
In addition to a scrumptious buffet dinner — at which patrons will hold their own plates while masked and gloved staff serve Ms. Richard’s cuisine — and sinful dessert bar, live big band music from Hashtag Swing will lure attendees out to the dance floor to jump ‘n’ jive.
Under the tutelage of decorator Devona Willis, the crew created large, patriotically themed centerpieces that included rockets and other pieces rising from a flouncy cloud of red, white and blue ribbons and bows.
“The ball isn’t until August 29, but we don’t want to be dealing with time-consuming projects like this at the last minute,” Pam Coffield, who headed the decorating committee, said.
“Besides,” volunteer Carol Moody said. “This is lots of fun and we’re indoors on a hot day!”
