The City of DeFuniak Springs Fire Department for the first time in its over 100 year history, will begin providing Advanced Life Support services to residents inside of the City limits of DeFuniak Springs. Fire Chief Ross Sheffield went before the Walton County Board of County Commissioners Tuesday evening July 12, to request a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to provide Advanced Life Support Services within The City of DeFuniak Springs. This would allow City of DeFuniak Springs Firefighters to also function as Emergency Medical Technicians Basic and Paramedics.
This progress now allows for both basic and advanced lifesaving interventions to be enacted by the Fire Department prior to a Walton County ambulance arriving on scene. Chief Sheffield anticipates that by October 1 2022, the Fire Department will have approval from the state of Florida to begin offering this valuable service to the community. The Fire Department has seen a steady increase in calls for service to the community with over 70% being medical in nature, and Chief Sheffield believes that this step forward in emergency services will undoubtedly result in more lives saved, and have a great impact on the quality of life for City residents. The City of DeFuniak Springs now joins Walton County Fire-Rescue and South Walton Fire-Rescue as being the sole providers of Advanced medical care within Walton County. Chief Sheffield would like to thank the Firemen who have worked extremely hard to help make this happen, along with the entire City Council, City Mayor, as well as the Walton County Board of County Commissioners.
