Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) released the following statement regarding the final vote in the House of Representatives on the Republican debt ceiling legislation, also known as the “Limit, Save, Grow Act.”

As early as March 2017, Rep. Gaetz has consistently advocated for work requirements to be a feature of federal spending reform. Most recently, in February of this year, Rep. Gaetz, along with Reps. Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Dan Bishop (NC-08), Lauren Boebert (CO-03), and Ralph Norman (SC-05), issued a letter to President Joe Biden urging the President to enact work requirements. The lawmakers called for the Biden Administration to work with Congress to cut irresponsible spending in order to address the looming national debt crisis. Furthermore, during Congressman Gaetz’s four terms in Congress, he has consistently voted against raising the debt ceiling.

“As our nation is careening into a $32 trillion debt, Congress shouldn’t be making final changes at 2 a.m. – the morning of the vote – to legislation raising the debt limit $1.5 trillion.

While I applaud the work of my Republican colleagues to demand better energy policy, regulatory reform, welfare-to-work requirements and less spending, a troubling fact remains. This plan will increase America’s debt by $16 trillion over the next ten years.

Gaslighting nearly $50 trillion in debt to America is something my conscious cannot abide at this time,” said Congressman Gaetz.
