Kindergartners at Liza Jackson Preparatory School got a close-up look at some of the large vehicles used by City of Fort Walton Beach employees during the school’s “Community Helpers” event on Friday.

City of Fort Walton Beach Public Works and Utility Services Director Daniel Payne and Kyle Oler with the city’s stormwater and streets division talked to students about one of the city’s heavy equipment vehicles, a John Deere loader, whose large bucket held more than a dozen young students as they posed for a picture.

Steven Foster with the city’s sanitation division talked about the knuckle-boom truck he uses to pick up large objects and other debris from the curbsides of city residents.

Chandler Aldrich with the city’s sewer collections division showed off the city’s new vacuum truck, which is used to remove large amounts of water and solid waste from stormwater catch basins and sewer lift stations so that workers can perform essential maintenance and repairs.

And Fort Walton Beach Police Department’s Master Police Officer Marcus Montgomery showed off the department’s mobile command vehicle, while fellow Community Policing Officer Karry Johnson handed out police badge stickers.
